Make sure that you invite these guys too.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfJPkedk57g...related&search=

I don't think there was enough brain power between all of them to power a light bulb, plus the driver was a total idiot.

Cool idea. I didn't ever read this thread.

mtdewmike- 02-01-2008
I'm for it, Barry. We'll need to find a place to do it.

TheInstaller- 02-01-2008
We definitely need to do this this year. I have a place that I am hoping will work out for this.

I'm game for it. Jeff, was that was the PM was about.

If so a Weekend would work for me if it's one of the ones I have off.

That was one of the possible locations. I am leading a scouting mission this weekend for the one I was referring to.

Keep us updated.

Athough, we might want to even do just a mock scenario on flat ground - like a mod day or whatnot - just to get a lot of basics out of the way before we even hit the trails.

TheInstaller- 02-01-2008
I'll keep you posted. From what I have been gathering on this area, it looks like it will give us a flat open area to go over the basics while keep us close to real trails.

Having a "recovery clinic" is an awesome idea.
Over at LINXC we had one back in November on the beach with NYS Park Police and Suffolk County Parks permission. We had a lot of trucks that didn't have NYS fishing permits that were allowed access for our clinic.
They truely supported us and hooked us up.

Pretty much as you guys said, we had a "control vehicle" that got stuck.
In our case we elected the Jeep Grand Cherokee, since he was outnumbered by Nissans. LOL

We made him keep it in 2wd and floor the gas in forward and reverse until he was stuck pretty good.

Then we had some of the noobs that have never recovered another truck step up and learn proper techniques for safe recovery using straps, etc..

Later on we buried my truck in a 4 foot hole (they dug it and I backed into it) since I couldn't get my truck stuck, it just wasn't cooperating. LOL
And I show people proper winching techniques for safe recoveries.

I highly recommend doing this on a beach because it is really a SAFE controlled environment and obviously because we are on an island surrounded by beaches. LOL But it makes it a lot easier to teach recoveries when no truck is in danger of killer an alternator or flooding the cabin.

In retrospect, we should have shown proper use of the hi-lift since most of us have them and HATE using them because they are so dangerous.

A really easy trail is another great place to do this at as well.

If you guys want any advice on this, please let me know. I'm more than happy to help out.

Enjoy the pix of our recovery day.. LOL

nexterra/dancing.gif awesome, Ken!!!

Jeff, I'm in...and will drive to wherever. I don't even know how to use a hi-lift!
But have used a tree-saver.....those are cool and I hadn't seen one used here
before. I could get one for the recovery day if no one has one.

romeoej- 02-02-2008
sounds like it would be a fun day!! def would like to attend

Yeah I’ve hated using my hi-lift ever since I had to use it at a UNYX run in front of a bunch of people I’d just met and it didn’t work properly. nexterra/banging.gif

I’m proficient with its use now but I must confess I’ll be one of the last to volunteer to help someone with it. It is so funny to see veteran wheelers, guys who would buy you a beer, help you move to a new house, have your back in a bar fight, wade through mud, crawl under, push, strap, winch or wrench your truck suddenly take a step back and have to check their tire pressure when the call for a hi-lift on the trail goes out. unsure.gif
However everyone who goes off road should not only know how to use one but carry the repair kit, know how to repair one, what constitutes up proper lift point on a truck and proper footing for the jack.

Make sure you take your time when using one (as you should with any recovery). Even though I’ve had to recover my junk many times I still ask for help and input from others in my group on any recovery. I want to make sure that my decisions are not being clouded by my concerns about any damage that I might have incurred getting myself into my predicament, by my embarrassment of being stuck or because I rush in the fear I might be holding everyone up. rolleyes.gif
Even though the feeling I get after the groups successful recovery of anyone’s truck is one of the best feelings I can have wheeling and one of the many reasons I love to wheel I never look forward to one that requires the use of a hi-lift. biggrin.gif

Those are good points, and there is something in there I don't carry (repair kit) and don't know how to do (repair the Hi-lift).

That should be something we include in the safety training.

Proper use of a fire extinguisher is somethign we might want to cover too, just in case.

Every time I need to use my hi-lift it needs a bit of uhmm... attention. rolleyes.gif
