OK...

We have a new dog, about a month ago, and now that she is content here she is starting to get more and more vocal...

My question (looking here before Google!!!) is...

What type of collar should we get for stopping hem from barking???

We could just go get her vocal box taken out... BUT I think a collar would be cheaper!!!

Thanks in advance...

Barking MAD!!!

Training before surgery, always... You will have better luck with training the dog properly even if that means paying a pro.

Well first off if you do the vocal box route, how is the animal going to let you know it is in pain or suffering?? rolleyes.gif My suggestion would be a spray bottle full of water set to a solid stream and just train him/her. Just because the dog is young you are looking to make the animal suffer the rest of its life, without any voice, without any guidance as to how to behave. sad.gif Would you do this to one of your children if they got out of line? Just a thought for yourself.

One of our clients had to get a shock collar for their dog. Every time the dog barks excessively, she presses a remote to give the dog a shock.

Just so you know... both of my girls have learned sign language... NO vocal cords!!! Had them removed at birth... did not want to hear them crying!!! nexterra/banana2.gif nexterra/banana2.gif nexterra/banana2.gif nexterra/banana2.gif

OK... all kidding aside!!!

I was joking about the voice box thing...

I'm looking for suggestions to keep her from barking all the time!!!

She is just over a year old (we think) so she is not a fresh puppy!!!

grab a water bottle, and every time she barks give her a few blasts.

if that doesn't work you can get bark collars at walmart that will work...
... as long as she's not a hyper active dog.
they work on vibration, and if she bounces a lot then the lil girl will be getting jolted around some.

also you can get remote E collars, but that requires you to be around the corner to hear and correct.
water and a strong NO will go far. try that first.

First off, there is a reason she is barking. That's the first step. Finding out why. It's like a baby, there is a reason behind it.

Spraying water is a good trainer, but not for barking. That will teach the dog never to bark. If someone tries to break into your house, she won't let you know. She will be afraid to bark.

The dog may be bored and looking for a playmate. She may want to go outside. She may just simply have a ton of energy that she wants to get rid of.

When does she bark? All the time or at certain times?

Oh yeah, I have three dogs ALL 4 years old. I've been through this.

i agree with you joe to a point...
there is a reason why she is barking.
however if they started catering to everything she barks for she will have the owners trained to jump and act upon her every barking order.

i have a german shorthaired pointed...
... you cant get much more energy dog than that.
bored dogs will bark to get your attention.
try switching her gears too, when she barks be kind and give her ten minutes of playtime.
see if that curbs it.

i didnt mean squirt her for every bark literally....
... i meant the unwarranted ones.
