Wally Shirra died this morning. He was one of the original Mercury astronauts. I was supposed to see him in Arizona in August at an Astronaut Convention. He was the only one to fly in all 3 of the early spaceflight programs (Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo)

I'm wicked sad that I have missed the opportunity to see a few of them due to their deaths (some from old age, some from cancer, etc) But have had the opportunity and pleasure of meeting several of them (a couple of them, more than once...and they remembered me!). Those men were amazing and TRUE heroes.

Wally was a great man. Brave and wonderful.

yeah well, i'm sure he's in Heaven with the Lord and a lot happier.....
